A narrative visualization showing the global response to Typhoon Haiyan through eBay's Power of Giving platforms.

On November 8th, 2013 Typhoon Haiyan (Typhoon Yolanda) crashed into Southeast Asia, devastating cities and towns throughout Micronesia, Southern China, Vietnam and most catastrophically the Philippines. Haiyan, the strongest storm ever recorded at landfall, killed over 6,300 making it one of the deadliest Philippine typhoon ever. Bodies are still being recovered in the destruction.

eBay's Power of Giving platform streamlines the process of donating through everyday purchase habits, enabling people from all over the world to give to natural disaster relief programs. eBay approached us with the aim of creating a visualization showing the scope and diversity of donation flows from their platforms to organizations focused on Typhoon Haiyan aid efforts. We structured a narrative around the visualization in order to tell the story of Haiyan's calamitous effects on the Philippines and how donations helped recovery efforts in the aftermath. We took a look at the donation type, amount, time and location data and felt it was natural to use a globe in order to show the breadth of giving around the world.

The viewer can interact with the globe by spinning to view countries or regions as well as hovering over the arcs to reveal detailed information about an individual donation. The three types of donations: Paypal users who sent money directly to an organization, eBay sellers who donated a portion of their profits and eBay buyers who opted to give while making a purchase can be toggled on and off to compare the volume of donations from each source. The bar graph can be expanded and each day can be rolled over to detail the overall amount given that day across platforms.

Totaling $23,241,194 in donations, this marks one of the largest charitable responses on eBay's platforms to date to a single major event.
