When producers suck most of the oil or gas out of a well, they move on. They are supposed to plug the old well and reclaim the land, but many are far behind. Across the United States, there are numerous unplugged “orphan” wells whose owners are long gone. Various studies find that a large amount of methane is leaking from all these portals into the atmosphere. This work we did for Scientific American helps illustrate where these wells exist across the country.
