Scientific American
Millions of people do not protect themselves against dangerously loud noise. Using a dataset and research from the University of California, Irvine, we created a visualization to demonstrate how modern life can be deafening by not always using ear protection when using even common household machinery, such as lawn mowers and power tools, that can do temporary and permanent damage to our ears. This visualization indicates that the highest levels of not wearing ear protection are in the recreational noise category which includes listening to music or video games with earbuds. And although the lowest level of never wearing ear protection is in the firearm noise category, a single shot can inflict permanent damage.
