Drought Monitor
Pitch Interactive, Inc.
Drought Monitor explores trends in air moisture in California since 1895. The visualization uses the Palmer Hydrological Drought Index (PHDI), a soil-moisture algorithm designed to measure the long-term impact of drought by taking into account reservoir levels, groundwater data and other slow-moving indicators. The visualization shows that the extreme wet and dry conditions have become more frequent and volatile, especially in the last few decades, in addition to the overall drying trend in California. This work helps communicate and further validate the effects of climate change.
